AZ Safety Grant

To all Papago School Staff,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Papago!  I am looking forward to working with each of you.  I would like to take a moment to introduce myself:

My name is John Harpster.  I consider myself very fortunate to be an officer with the City of Phoenix and your School Resource Officer.  I have worked as an officer in Phoenix for 15 years.  I have worked in different parts of the city, and in different police capacities.  I have been assigned to the specialty detail of SRO for 12 years.  I have successfully completed my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University and have an affinity for teaching.

My assignment here is facilitated through an Arizona State School Safety Grant and it has three priorities for my position:

  1. School safety (to keep the school and everyone at it safe).
  2. Investigate criminal activity.
  3. Law Related Education (LRE).

In the last component, LRE, I am required by the School Safety Grant to teach at Papago for 180 hours a school year.  This gives me the opportunity to visit classrooms and assist teachers with instruction that has a law related theme.  I am interested in visiting classrooms on the campus that will be able to make time for me, and at the very least make an introduction, especially if this is your first year at Papago.  I plan to do introduction lessons between August – September.  In October will be providing a Halloween Safety lessons.

In doing any lesson I can easily fill a whole hour.  In my introduction lesson I give an explanation of my job duties on campus and, if time permits, I will talk about the tools I use to facilitate my work as a police officer and the science and technology behind them.

Thank you,
